Brasília - The members of the CPI (Comissão Parlamentar de Inquérito) which has been investigating activities of death squads (grupos de extermínio) in the Northeastern region of Brazil are scheduled to vote on a final report today. The report was written by the CPI redactor, deputy Luiz Couto (PT-PB).

This CPI was set up in September 2003 and has had its work extended for six additional periods.

In his report, Couto calls for the indictment of police officials, judges, prosecutors and civil servants. He also recommends that a number of police officials be removed from service and investigated. Finally, he says that many inquiries that have been closed should be reopened.
