Brasília, July 2, 2004 (Agência Brasil) - Political will is necessary to eliminate Hansen's disease (leprosy). And, "fortunately, this is now a reality." These declarations were made by the World Health Organization's (WHO) Ambassador for the Elimination of Hansen's Disease, Yokei Sasakawa, referring to the Ministry of Health's Plan for the Erradication of Hansen's Disease, instated to encourage early diagnosis and to fight the prejudice against the disease.

The Ambassador came to Brazil to discuss the issue of Hansen's disease during the IX National Human Rights Conference and become acquainted with the Ministry of Health's program. Before returning to Japan on Monday (5), he will meet with President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

Hansen's disease remains a recurring problem in Brazil. The malady is caused by a bacteria, transmitted through the respiratory system, and characterized by the appearance of white and reddish spots on the skin. According to data from the Ministry of Health, Brazil ranks second in the world, behind India, in the number of victims. In some Brazilian states, around 20 cases exist in each group of 10,000 in the population.
