Brasília, 6/28/2004 (Agência Brasil) - Brazilian farmers harvested 4.1 million tons of genetically- modified (GM) soybeans in 2003/2004. That works out to 8.2% of the total soy harvest of slightly over 50 million tons. Ministry of Agriculture estimates are that the GM soy was worth US$867 million (R$2.7 billion).

Brazil's biggest soy producer is the state of Rio Grande do Sul (slightly over 88% of total production). The Ministry of Agriculture estimates that 13.2% of Brazil's total soy cropland is being used to raise GM soy.
