Rio seeks electricity from alternative sources

Rio, 3/11/2004 (Agência Brasil - ABr) - Four companies - Seawest, Gamesa, SIIF (of the EDF group which controls Light) and Novaenergia - are gearing up to produce electricity with windmills in the state of Rio de Janeiro. The state has the best winds in the southeast region of the country. Along with windmills, work is underway to get electricity from biomass and small hydroelectric power plants, as well. By the end of 2006 total alternative electricity production in the state of Rio de Janeiro is expected to reach 3,300 MW (1,100 MW from each of the alternative sources). (AB)
