Federal Savings Bank begins to transfer R$ 33.7 million to rebuild homes

Brasília, March 10, 2004 (Agência Brasil - ABr) - The Federal Savings Bank (CEF) starts today the transfer of R$ 33.766 million for the reconstruction of 5,022 houses destroyed in 15 Brazilian states affected by the rain. According to the Ministers of National Integration, Ciro Gomes, and Cities, Olívio Dutra, this is only the first of various lots of resources that will be made available. The funds are being directed to cities that presented work plans to the Ministries of Integration and Cities, guaranteeing the the new houses will not be built in areas of risk. "The legal requirement is a work plan that shows that the houses will be erected in safe locales. This serves to prevent the houses from being built in inadequate locations," Gomes explained. Pernambuco has the largest number of houses that will be rebuilt in these phase: 1,019. The state with the smallest number of houses is Rio de Janeiro, with only 8 houses to be rebuilt. (DAS)
