Unesco awards Brazilian for work on Chagas' disease

Brasília, 3/10/2004 (Agência Brasil - ABr) - Brazil is recognized worldwide for its significant contribution to the study and prevention of Chagas' disease. That work has now been acknowledged by the United Nations. The Unesco/L'Oreal Award for Women in Science has been given to Lucia Mendonça Previato, who works at the Carlos Chagas Biosphysical Institute at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ). Previato will receive US$100,000,which crowns over 20 years of laboratory research. She is the second Brazilian to receive the Unesco/L'Oreal award. (AB)
