Brasília, 3/10/2004 (Agência Brasil - ABr) - According to the head of the economic department at the National Agricultural Confederation (CNA), Getulio Pernambuco, explains that labelling genetically modified (GM) products is going to be complicated and will have a cost.
Pernambuco says the new labels will increase consumer prices. And, because it is difficult to separate GM soybeans from non-GM soybeans, farmers will prefer to label all soybean products as GM. "Anyone who wants a product guaranteed to be non-GM, will have to pay extra for it," he says.
Brazilian legislation, in effect since April 2003, requires a product that is over 1% GM to be labeled as such. )AB)
