Suspects in murder of missionary are arrested in Mozambique

Brasília, March 2, 2004 (Agência Brasil - ABr) - Arrests were made in Mozambique of individuals suspected of participation in the assassination of a Brazilian missionary in the city of Nampula, in the northern part of the country. The General Prosecutors' Office of Mozambique is still unaware of the motives behind the crime, which occurred last week, but it disclosed that a hammer was found by the bed of Sister Doraci Edinguer, 53.

The corpse of Edinguer, who belonged to the Evangelical Lutheran Church, was discovered last Tuesday (24) in her apartment in Nampula, with marks of violence on her body and head. Her remains should arrive tomorrow (3) morning in Brazil, where they will be handed over to the missionary's relatives, who live in Novo Hamburgo (RS). A collective interview with Pastor Valter Altmann, president of the Evangelical Church of the Lutheran Confession in Brazil, is also scheduled for tomorrow. He accompanied investigators in the reenactment of the crime.

Although she was a Lutheran, Edinguer's death raises suspicions, because she lived in Nampula, a city in which a group of Catholic nuns denounced the existence of a human organ trafficking network. However, no evidence has been discovered so far connecting the missionary's death with human organ trafficking. (DAS)
