Brasília, February 23, 2004 (Agência Brasil - ABr) - In January the central government (Federal Treasury, Central Bank, and Social Security) achieved a fiscal surplus of R$ 7.0 billion, equivalent to 5.28% of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP).
Net revenues amounted to R$ 29.9 billion in January, and expenditures came to R$ 22.2 billion. In January, 2003, the fiscal balance registered a R$ 7.2 billion surplus. In December, 2003, there was a R$ 5.9 billion deficit.
The National Treasury contributed a R$ 10.2 billion surplus to January's results, while Social Security and the Central Bank were responsible for deficits of R$ 3.2 billion and R$ 3.8 million, respectively. (DAS)
