18/02/2004 - 19h32

Brasília, February 19, 2004 (Agência Brasil - ABr) - In its first exhibition match this year, the Brazilian national soccer team was held to a 0x0 tie by the Irish Republic, yesterday (18), in the Lansdowne Road Stadium, in Dublin.

From the start of the game, the team coached by Carlos Alberto Parreira tried to score, but the Irish Selection concentrated on defense. The Irish players took advantage of balls in the air, creating many problems for the Brazilians. Coach Parreira had to make a substitution in the first 15 minutes, because Gilberto Silva was bruised disputing a ball with Kavanagh and Kilbeane early in the game. He was replaced by Edmilson.

The two teams were balanced in the second half, in search of a victory. In the 7th minute, Lúcio, a back, risked a kick from outside the area, but the goalie, Given, made a spectacular save. The best opportunity for Brazil came in the 29th minute, when the striker, Ronaldo, received the ball on the run and nearly scored a goal. Given made another great save. The rebound went to Ronaldinho Gaúcho, who kicked the ball into the crossbar from just outside the area. (DAS)
