Porto Alegre, January 30, 2004 (Agência Brasil - ABr) - The leaders of a rebellion that lasted 10 hours in the Socio-Educational Care Foundation (Fase) of Porto Alegre will be tried for organizing an uprising, private incarceration, and conspiracy and transferred to the Central Prison to serve their sentences.

30 adolescents took part in the rebellion, which began Wednesday (28) night and ended yesterday (30), when the mutineers released two guards who were being held hostage, ending the rebellion. The uprising began with a fight among inmates, when three adolescents were beaten by their colleagues. Five guards who entered the block to contain the confrontation were used as hostages in an unsuccessful escape attempt. The youth destroyed bathrooms, broke doors, and burned mattresses. (DAS)
