Rio, November 20, 2003 (Agência Brasil - ABr) - As one of the activities in the "Household Poison" campaign, the non-governmental organization (NGO) Greenpeace began to collect dust samples in 15 residences in different neighborhoods, to detect what toxic substances are present in homes in Rio. The dust will be sent to the Dutch laboratory TNO for analysis.
According to information from the Greenpeace advisory office, the residences were chosen among a universe of over 300 that signed up by telephone or the internet to participate in the campaign, which will cover a total of 60 homes in the states of Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, and Rio Grande do Sul. The intention of the NGO is also to gather dust samples in offices of the National Congress, in Brasília.
Through this, also according to the advisory office, "Greenpeace intends to alert the population to the fact that toxic substances used in the manufacture of rugs, television sets, toys, and cosmetics may be contaminating people inside their own homes." (DAS)
