Four more Brazilians become members of the Third World Academy of Sciences

Brasília, November 4, 2003 (Agência Brasil - ABr) - The Third World Academy of Sciences (TWAS) selected four more Brazilian scientists to join the institution. Aloísio Pessoa de Araújo, Antônio Carlos Campos de Carvalho, George Alexandre dos Reis, and José Fernando Perez were chosen to become new members at the 9th General Conference of the TWAS, held in Beijing.

Founded in 1983, in Trieste, Italy, the TWAS is an autonomous international organization with the objective of promoting scientific capacity and excellence for sustainable development. Formed by over 20 countries, the institution now has 710 members, 60 of whom are Brazilians.

Aloísio Pessoa is an economist who teaches at the National Institute of Pure and Applied Mathematics (Impa) and the Post-Graduate School of Economics of the Getúlio Vargas Foundation. Antônio Carlos Campos and George Alexandre are physicians and teach at the Carlos Chagas Filho Biophysics Institute of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro. José Fernande Peres is a physicist and teaches in the Mathematical Physics department of the Institute of Physics at the University of São Paulo. All of them are members of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences. (DAS)
