Brasília, October 15, 2003 (Agência Brasil - ABr) - The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) advises caution in the liberation of genetically modified organisms. According to the organization's representative in Brazil, José Tubino, FAO suggests care and does not recommend liberating transgenics before the necessary studies are concluded. "The studies must be done on the basis of scientific and technical credibility, and the decisions pertain to each country's policy sphere," he said. He reflected that the issue is controversial, and, for this reason, each case has to be analyzed separately, for which countries should strengthen their bio-security committees. (DAS)
