Brasília, 8/20/2003 (Agência Brasil - ABr) - The United States embassy in Brasilia has released the following note on the death of UN special representative in Iraq, Sergio Vieira de Mello.

"The embassy of the United States in Brazil shares in the mourning and pain that all Brazilians feel because of the tragic death of Sergio Vieira de Mello. His death was a loss for the Brazilian people, for the United Nations, and for everyone in the world who loves the ideal of peace that he served so dynamically and with such dedication. The success of his former missions in Kosovo and East Timor showed his extraordinary capacity as a mediator in times of crises. Sergio Vieira de Mello will be deeply missed. Our hearts are with his family and his many friends." (AB)
