Brasília, August 15, 2003 (Agência Brasil - ABr) - Inflation under control, reduction of the Brazil risk premium, and recovery of the country's image and trust abroad constitute, in the opinion of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, the principal actions of the Administration in its first seven months in office. According to the President, these measures have allowed the government to reduce interest rates in the country, essential for the resumption of economic growth.

President Lula made an assessment of his seven months in office over a national radio and television link this Thursday (14). He recalled that, during this period, he visited 12 countries and was able to open foreign markets for Brazilian products, intensifying Brazil's relations with important partners, such as China, India, Russia, and South Africa.

Another project worthy of the President's attention was the Zero Hunger program. Lula recalled that the government took this program to the interior of the Northeast and other poor regions of the country, in states such as Minas Gerais, Espírito Santo, Santa Catarina, Rio Grande do Sul, Acre, and Mato Grosso do Sul. The President also made a point of referring to the launching of the First Job program.

Infrastructure, one of the government's priorities for the second half of the year, was also cited by the President. Lula said that the government reactivated many public works that were paralyzed. As an example, he referred to the doubling of lanes on the Fernão Dias highway (which links São Paulo and Belo Horizonte) and the conclusion of the Porto Alencastro bridge (on the border between Minas Gerais and Mato Grosso do Sul). "This, and much more, in only seven months! And there are still people who complain!" he exclaimed.

The complaints, according to the President, will not perturb the Administration's willingness to continue working. Lula said that there is still a lot of time and much to do. "Be sure that, one by one, the big problems in Brazil will be faced. Always in a calm, balanced, serene, and democratic manner. And always with firmness and decision. After all, that is why you elected me President of Brazil," he concluded. (DAS)
