Brasília, August 13, 2003 (Agência Brasil - ABr) - The efforts that Brazil has been making to combine democracy, social rights, and economic progress offer a perfect example of the harmonious development to which all nations aspire. This assessment was made today, to the Agência Brasil, by Arjun Sengupta, a UN expert on the Right to Development for the UN Human Rights Commission. Since he assumed the position in 1999, professor Sengupta has been working for the definition and global understanding of the Right to Development.
This week he is visiting Brazilian government authorities, and, on Friday, he will meet in Rio de Janeiro with representatives of non-governmental organizations. Today, following an encounter with the Minister of Foreign Relations, Celso Amorim, he said that he has observed that Lula's Administration is preparing the way for extremely consistent actions that link development and human rights. "For this reason, the international organizations that work in the area of defending these rights have a great deal of interest in being able to accompany the success of the Brazilian experience," he affirmed.
