Rio, August 1, 2003 (Agência Brasil - ABr) - Brazil can be self-sufficient in wheat production in ten years. This forecast comes from the general head of Embrapa Soils, Doracy Pessoa. At yesterday's (31) presentation of the Map of Brazil's Soils, fruit of a partnership between the Brazilian Agricultural Research Company (Embrapa) and the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE), he explained that knowledge obtained through soil studies, genetic research, and the adoption of the system of direct planting are factors that have contributed to increased productivity. Pessoa pointed out that, in this respect, the Map of Brazil's Soils represents an advance that will permit the growth of national production. (DAS)
