Brasília, July 24, 2003 (Agência Brasil - ABr) - Representatives of Brazilian agrobusiness oppose the extension of the so-called Peace Clause, scheduled to expire on December 31, 2003. This position was defined at the second meeting of the Thematic Chamber for International Agricultural Negotiations, held today at the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, and Supply. The question will be discussed at the ministerial meeting of the World Trade Organization (WTO), from September 10-13, in Cancun (Mexico).
The Peace Clause, created in 1984, following the Uruguay agricultural round, sets rules to guarantee normalcy on the world agricultural market. Under its rules, no country can have recourse to the WTO, even if it feels it has been harmed. (DAS)
