CC5 accounts under investigation in Paraná

Curitiba, 7/18/2003 (Agência Brasil - ABr) - Members of the Joint Parliamentary Investigative Commission (CPI), which is looking into illegal remittances of money abroad through so-called CC5 accounts at the official Paraná state bank (Banestado), and other banks, met with the local task force that is also investigating the matter on Friday. The task force consists of representatives of the federal legal office (Ministério Público), the IRS (Receita Federal) and the Federal Police. Under investigation is the illegal remittance of some US$30 billion between 1996 and 1999.

The members of the CPI visiting Curitiba are: senator Antero Paes de Barros (PSDB/MT), the commission chairman (presidente); deputy José Mentor (PT/SP), who will write the commission report (relator); deputy Rodrigo Maia (PFL/RJ) commission vice chairman (vice president) and deputy Paulo Bernardo (PT/PR).

The commission is expected to send some members to the United States in order to get more information on the scheme. (AB)
