Ministry of Education ready to be more active in fight against child labor

Brasília, 7/4/2003 (Agência Brasil - ABr) - The head of the School Scholarship Program (Bolsa-Escola) [which basically pays parents to keep their children in school], Marcelo Aguiar, reports that the Ministry of Education wants to be more active in the fight against child labor. "This is not just to get kids off the streets. We want to put them in school," said Aguiar, speaking at the Global March Against Child Labor, a joint government-civil society event.

The international coordinator of the march, Kailash Saqyarthi, will meet today with minister of Education, Cristovam Buarque, to express support for quality in public education. (AB)
