Rio, June 23, 2003 (Agência Brasil - ABr) - Brazilian companies that implant projects for clean production and corroborate the reduction of pollutent gas emissions in the atmosphere will be able to participate in the international carbon credits market, obtaining additional returns currently estimated at US$ 5-10 per ton of carbon on their investment.

This information was provided to Radiobrás by Christinne Maroun, manager of ICF, an American consulting firm that will hold a seminar, tomorrow (24), in Rio, to teach Brazilian entrepreneurs to negotiate with European companies their credits for reducing greenhouse gas emissions. The event is being promoted in partnership with the Brazilian Petroleum and Gas Institute (IBP).

According to Maroun, the potential beneficiaries of carbon credits include steel mills, petroleum refineries, and energy companies in general, as well as all firms that implant clean development mechanisms, producing energy as part of their industrial process and replacing fossil fuel with renewable energy sources.

To this end, companies should conduct inventories of carbon and methane gas emissions before and after the implantation of emission reduction projects, project the overall lifetime cost of the project, and perform the financial analysis that will give the value of the credits that can be obtained on the international market.
