Brasília, 6/17/2003 (Agência Brasil - ABr) - Yesterday the government released a new development agenda. Its principal goals are to stimulate sustainable development and guarantee economic growth in the near future.

The agenda calls for approximately US$20 billion in annual investments in infrastructure, and a new industrial policy for the country.

The challenge is to grow and also reduce the so-called "Brazil cost," which the government believes can be achieved through technological advances and a strong export sector, which have private sector financial support, says the document. The agenda was explained by ministers of Finance, Antonio Palocci, and Planning, Budget and Management, Guido Mantega.

The country's system of tax exemptions will be revised so as to permit the government to determine where bets should be made. The government will give credit, tax exemptions and special attention to firms that are competitive, explained minister of Finance, Antonio Palocci.

Problematic sectors of the economy will also get special attention. They will be carefully mapped to pinpoint bottlenecks, financial needs and deficiencies. Investments in problem sectors, such as electrical-electronics and pharmaceuticals, could extend for periods of up to 5 years. "Our goal is to make these firms competitive internationally," said Mantega. (AB)
