Brasília, January 28, 2003 (Agência Brasil - ABr) - The Minister of Education, Cristovam Buarque, emphasized today, during an address on "Education for the Third Millenium," that there are three major projects that have priority in Lula's administration: the elimination of adult illiteracy, which he regards as a question of social justice; the establishment of a satisfactory school; and the construction of a new university.

"We need to transform Brazil into one big school. We are the builders of the intelligence of the future, and, therefore, we cannot permit 20 million Brazilians to remain illiterate and tortured," he argued.

The Minister observed that it is necessary to give emphasis to Literature and Mathematics in the school curriculum, as well as the promotion of ethic values. (DAS)
