Brasilia – The commander of the Ninth Naval District, which has its headquarters in Manaus and is part of Brazil's Amazon Fleet, says it will begin an administrative investigation into the sinking of the Ariaú Açu, a tourist boat that belongs to a hotel in Manaus, Hotel de Selva Ariaú Amazon Towers. The accident occurred on Friday, September 7, around 4:15 pm.
There were 33 tourists on the boat when it sank, along with five crewmen and two workers from the hotel. No lives were lost.
Some twelve people were rescued from the river and given first aid by three boats in the vicinity. The rest were picked up by naval rescue vessels.
