Brasília – President Dilma Rousseff decided to move quickly to substitute Supreme Court justice Cezar Peluso who left the court at the beginning of the month due to mandatory retirement (he turned 70 on September 3).
The nominee is Teori Albino Zavascki, 64, a judge on the Superior Appeals Court (“Superior Tribunal de Justiça – STJ”). He is from Santa Catarina and was not on the many lists of favorites for the seat. He has been on the STJ since May 2003. He is an authority on electoral law. He was a professor at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul. At the moment he teaches at the University of Brasilia (“UnB”). His name has to approved by the Senate.
