Rio de Janeiro – The eleven policemen (“PMs”) accused of involvement in the murder of a judge, Patrícia Acioli, will go to a jury trial. In Brazil, it is usual in this kind of case for the defense to attempt to avoid a jury trial (“Tribunal do Juri”). In remanding the accused to trial, the judge who made the decision, Peterson Barroso Simão declared that “…the material evidence (“materialidade dos fatos”) and indications of authorship, coauthorship and participation were convincing.”
Judge Patricia Acioli, who handled cases involving corrupt members of the police force (“PM”), was ambushed in front of her home in Niteroi on August 11, and shot 21 times.
