Sapucaia, RJ – Since Monday, January 9, the BR-393 highway that runs between the states of Rio de Janeiro and Espirito Santo has been closed. Truckers are stuck in gas stations waiting for the highway to be opened and they are frustrated that neither the private firm, Acciona, the highway concessionaire, or the governmental Land Transportation Agency (“Agência Nacional de Transportes Terrestres – ANTT”), seem to be doing anything to liberate traffic. “We pay to use this highway and they are not fixing anything to open it to traffic and make our lives a little easier,” one of the drivers told a reporter from Agência Brasil.
Federal Highway Police (“Polícia Rodoviária Federal”) have released a note advising drivers to avoid the BR-393. Meanwhile, the ANTT says that Acciona has begun an operational plan to mark critical points and remove debris on the highway (there were significant landslides on the BR-393). According to the note, the repair of the highway will probably extend to the end of the month.
