Brasília – The Ministry of Agriculture ordered a suspension of imports of beef from Paraguay on Tuesday (January 3) after Paraguayan authorities in the Departamento (state) of San Pedro confirmed the existence of foot and mouth disease.
The import suspension is just one in a series of measures ranging from a mobilization of army personnel along the border to assist in sanitation vigilance (that will include renewed disinfection of all vehicles coming into Brazil from the neighboring country) and the cancellation of all farm animal fairs in the border region with Paraguay. The Brazilian government will be sending a technical team into Paraguay next week to verify animal control measures and oversee inspection of farms in the border region.
