Brasília – Eleven days after twelve students were shot dead and another thirteen wounded by a lone gunman, the Tasso da Silveira middle school in Realengo, Rio de Janeiro, will once again open its doors today.

Students, teachers, family members and other staff at the school have scheduled a ceremony they are calling “reinvention” to mark the occasion. But the tragic events of April 7 have left their own marks: outside the school wall the sidewalks are filled with posters, candles and flowers in memory of the dead and injured.

The school got a facelift. There is a new paint job and other changes are being made. The classrooms where the shooting took place will be turned into study halls. Students will be able to make mosaics on walls.

People who knew the gunman, a former student of Tasso da Silveira, say he acted strangely and expressed a great deal of interest in terrorist attacks with lots of victims. In computer messages he complained about being the victim of bullying at school.
