Rio de Janeiro – A Rio de Janeiro court (“TJRJ”) has ordered the man who sold a gun to the former student, Wellington Menezes de Oliveira, who went on a shooting spree at a municipal school last week (April 7), to be arrested and placed in preventive custody. The man is Manuel Freitas Louvise and he has confessed to selling a .38 revolver, ammunition and a magazine to Wellington.

Two other men who sold Wellington another gun, a .32 revolver, have already been arrested.

On April 7, Wellington, carrying the two revolvers, entered the Escola Municipal Tasso da Silveira in the Realengo neighborhood where he had been a student and killed twelve students, wounding twelve others, before he was shot by a policeman. Wellington then killed himself.

Brazil has rigid gun control laws and the sale of guns, without any registration or documentation, such as in the case of the guns sold to Wellington, is strictly prohibited.
