Recife, February 23, 2004 (Agência Brasil - ABr) - The Minister of Education, Tarso Genro stated, Thursday (19), that federal investments in his area were not affected by general cuts in the federal budget. According to Genro, the resources will be nearly five times greater than they were last year, giving a boost to the country's growth rates.

During a ceremony at the Palace of the Princesses, where he signed a work order authorizing the renovation of 34 schools in 31 Pernambucan cities, the Minister assured that the 149 educational establishments in the state damaged by the heavy rains will receive federal financial help to resume their activities.

The projects authorized by the Minister involve R$ 29.8 million in funds from the Alvorada Project and will take a year to complete. The renovations will benefit 47 thousand students, whose schools will acquire adequate lighting, science and computer laboratories, libraries, and playing fields. (DAS)
