Brasília, April 29, 2003 (Agência Brasil - ABr) - Special Presidential Adviser, Brother Beto, recalled that for the Zero Hunger program to be understood across the country, it is essential for the population to participate and for each region to seek the most appropriate solutions in terms of local reality in the fight against hunger.

In a speech this Monday (28) at a college in Brasília, he explained that the program created in 1990 is based on food security. He also pointed out that Zero Hunger is not a hand-out, since it foresees social inclusion and the generation of income and employment, and he explained how it will be monitored, transparently, by the Federal Accounting Court (TCU).

As well as fighting hunger, the program will provide nutritional instruction. Brother Beto recalled that 100 thousand children under five years of age die every year in Brazil as a result of malnutrition, two-thirds of them from drinking contaminated water. (DAS)
