TSE proclaims election results

Brasília, October 29,2002 (Agência Brasil - ABr) - Last night the president of the Superior Electoral Court (TSE), Nelson Jobim, proclaimed the partial results of Sunday's runoff election. Votes from one voting machine - that is missing after a car accident - remain uncounted. The TSE also reports that a total of 320,458 electronic voting machines were used nationwide.

According to the TSE, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva had 61.27% of valid votes, totalling 52,792,927. José Serra got a total of 33,370,489 votes or 38.73%. Abstentions totalled 20.47% in the runoff election, up from 17.74% during the first round of voting on October 6. (AB)
