Project to revitalize São Francisco River region to receive R$ 45 million this year

Brasilia, 22 (Agência Brasil - ABr) - The acting Minister of Environment, Jose Carlos Carvalho, informed - in an interview to Radiobras - that the São Francisco River Revitalization Project, launched in 2001, will receive a total of R$ 45 million (approx. US$ 18.6 million) this year. The money will be used for the depollution of the river, the conservation of soils in a good state and recuperation of degraded areas, actions aimed at teaching locals to live and prosper with the drought, reforestation, environmental education, and supervision of the overseeing of the river's regions, among other actions. Money will also be allocated for the riverside-dwelling population to help them pursue alternative sources of income, such as fishing and sustainable agriculture. (MW)
